Munich Philatelic Library
The Munich Philatelic Library was started in 1931 by Christoph Otto Müller in a small room at the City Hall. He managed to combine several major private philatelic literature collections and the Munich club libraries.
In 1985 the Philatelic Library was integrated into the Munich Central Library, which opened at the new Cultural Centre „Am Gasteig“.
With a current holding of 56.000 media units in 43 languages it is the largest library for literature on Philately and Postal History in Germany and among the 5 major holdings worldwide. Except for books that are too old or precious, or for unbound publications, all literature is available for borrowing locally or by National or International Library Loan.
For members of the German Philatelic Federation (BDPh) special conditions apply for borrowing by mail.
Since mailing books from Germany to foreign counties is very expensive for postage, we try to accomodate wishes for pages or chapters by fotocopying. Please inquire about the costs.
Our reading room is on the 3rd level of the Central Library, and it is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 7 pm and Saturday 11 am to 4 pm. Visitors can browse the stock in the reading room and order books from the closed stacks within half an hour.
Except for a reminder of early literature and broken runs of early journals all literature is catalogued and can be found in our Online Catalogue (OPAC).
